Interviewee: Mr Karsten Bier, CEO of RECOM Power and Mr Harry Gu, Managing Director of RECOM Asia
RECOM Power is participating in electronica India 2026 in Bengaluru. What are your key objectives for the show, and what would you like visitors and industry professionals to take away from your presence?
One of our key objectives at electronica India 2026 is to introduce Indian R&D engineers to RECOM’s expanded approach to power conversion, particularly our new Power IC, transformer and discrete solutions.
We want to give engineers greater flexibility in how they develop their power supplies. In addition to our established ready-to-use Power Converters, customers can now work with RECOM on pre-tested IC and transformer combinations, providing a more flexible and cost-effective route to developing an isolated power solution directly on the PCB.
A key advantage is speed. Our pre-tested IC and transformer solution board can be delivered to customers within 20 working days, helping engineers accelerate evaluation and shorten their development cycle.
At the show, we would like visitors to see that RECOM is no longer only a Power Converter supplier. We can now support engineers with both complete Power Converters and discrete IC and transformer solutions, depending on their design, performance, cost and time-to-market requirements.
2. Power efficiency, compact design, thermal management and reliability are becoming increasingly important across industrial and automotive applications. How is RECOM Power addressing these evolving requirements through its latest power solutions?
We see several important trends shaping power electronics today. Customers are looking for higher power density, improved efficiency and better thermal performance, while at the same time expecting shorter development cycles and high reliability.
RECOM addresses these requirements by giving engineers different levels of integration depending on their application.
For customers who prioritise simplicity, reliability and fast time-to-market, our traditional Power Converters provide a complete, tested and ready-to-use solution.
At the same time, our new Power IC, transformer and discrete solutions provide greater flexibility for customers who want to optimise their own designs in terms of size, layout, performance and cost.
By offering both approaches, we can support customers from initial design through volume production with the solution that best fits their technical and commercial requirements.
3. RECOM has been expanding its portfolio into Power ICs and discrete power solutions. Could you tell us more about your latest Power IC offerings and how they can help engineers develop more efficient and compact power supplies?
Our initial Power IC portfolio focuses primarily on isolated low-power DC/DC conversion, with solutions covering different topologies including push-pull, full-bridge and flyback.
The portfolio includes primary-side transformer driver ICs and secondary-side smart rectifier ICs, supported by matched SMD transformers. Our solutions cover applications from approximately 1W to 30W, depending on the topology and application.
One of the key advantages is that customers do not necessarily have to start their designs from zero. RECOM can provide matched and pre-tested IC and transformer combinations, helping engineers reduce component-selection risk and shorten evaluation and development time.
This gives designers the flexibility of a discrete solution while benefiting from RECOM’s extensive experience in power conversion.
4. Transformers are a critical component in isolated power-conversion designs. What new transformer solutions is RECOM showcasing, and what key advantages do they offer in terms of efficiency, size, thermal performance and design flexibility?
Selecting the Power IC is only one part of designing an isolated power supply. The transformer is equally critical and is often one of the more challenging components for engineers to select and optimise.
Transformer characteristics directly influence important aspects of the overall design, including efficiency, isolation, EMI performance, thermal behaviour and reliability.
This is why RECOM’s approach is not simply to offer Power ICs independently. We also provide standard and custom transformer solutions, including transformer options that have been matched and tested together with our Power ICs.
By combining Power IC and transformer expertise within one solution, we can help engineers simplify component selection, reduce development effort and achieve greater design flexibility.
5. Looking ahead, what are RECOM Power’s priorities for the Indian market, and how do you see your product portfolio evolving to support the next generation of power-electronics designs?
Our priority is to provide Indian customers with a one-stop power solution covering power requirements from mains input all the way down to sensor-level applications.
RECOM’s portfolio ranges from off-board AC/DC and DC/DC solutions up to 100kW, through our established high-quality and highly reliable Power Converters, down to 0.25W IC-based DC/DC solutions. We are now extending this further with discrete solutions combining Power ICs and transformers to create isolated DC/DC power supplies directly on the PCB.
For the Indian market, this allows us to address different customer requirements. We can provide high-quality, high-reliability AC/DC and DC/DC Power Converters for demanding applications, while also offering highly cost-competitive, high-performance solutions for lower-power DC/DC and AC/DC applications.
Power management ICs will be an important part of our future strategy, particularly as we continue to develop solutions that address the performance, integration and cost requirements of Indian customers.
Overall, our direction is to give engineers greater choice: from a complete, tested and ready-to-use Power Converter to a more flexible IC and transformer-based discrete solution. This enables RECOM to support a much broader range of power requirements and customer needs in India.
