Adam Tech’s Connector Solutions for Ventilators

Untitled

The COVID-19 coronavirus has caused a global pandemic, affecting people’s activities in approximately 210 countries. Most people who are infected will have mild to moderate respiratory symptoms and can recover without special treatment. However, the elderly and people with underlying medical conditions, such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, respiratory diseases and cancer, are more likely to develop serious respiratory symptoms, which will require the use of a ventilator to treat.

The amount/types of connectors used in each ventilator will vary greatly depending on the manufacturer and the type/model of the ventilator. Common connector types include terminal blocks, wire-to-board headers, lock headers, and I/O connectors.

Adam Tech’s Euro Blocks provide power to the processor board, control the main valve of the ventilator application, and power the compressor. The EB Series is comprised of a broad range of PCB mounted blocks in various sizes and profiles with pitches ranging from 3.50mm to 15.00mm. Included are top, side, and side angle wire entry types. Two piece ‘pluggable’ versions and ‘lever actuated’ styles are also available. Each euro block provides a unique wire guard design and is precision manufactured for smooth operation and ease of use.

For Wire-to-Board Headers, Adam Tech’s DMH and DML series are used to send signal and power to the LCD panels of ventilators. For lock headers, Adam Tech’s LHA and LHS series are typically used as a user interface button connection to control the ventilator. Adam Tech’s multiple matching sets of crimp wire housings and PCB mounted shrouded headers are available in straight, right angle, or SMT orientation. Offered in various popular industry standard styles, they provide a lightweight, fine pitched, polarized, and high reliability connection system.

Multiple I/O connectors are used in ventilators, including standard and micro USB connectors, SD card connectors, and D-subminiature connectors. These are all typically used with other microcontrollers (MCU) or directly with the computer’s interface. The connectors are also used for communication connections, including remote alarms. I/O connectors also include Ethernet, RJ45 modular jacks, circular connectors, and BNC connectors.

Other connectors used in ventilators are DC and AC power connectors, externally connected XPOD pulse oximeters, and oxygen concentration monitoring sensors (FiO2 sensors).
