New X2-Series expansion board brings LTE cellular connectivity and GNSS positioning to the Strato Pi Max industrial server platform

Sfera Labs has released the M.2 LTE Module X2-Series Expansion Board (X2BW10XM2Z), a new swappable expansion board that adds LTE cellular connectivity and GNSS positioning to its Strato Pi Max XL and XS servers.

The Strato Pi Max is a compact and versatile industrial controller based on the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 or 5.It features a modular architecture with swappable X2-Series expansion boards that adapt the platform to a wide range of applications, by adding digital and analog I/O, RS-485, RS-232, RS-422, CAN, and UPS options. With the addition of the M.2 LTE Module expansion board, the Strato Pi Max gains always-on cellular data connectivity and satellite-based positioning—capabilities that are essential for deployments where wired Ethernet or Wi-Fi are unavailable or unreliable.

The expansion board is compatible with the Telit LN920A family of M.2 LTE data cards and includes two Nano SIM slots for redundant connectivity or multi-operator configurations. Full software control lines are provided for LTE modem power, reset, RF disable (airplane mode), GNSS disable, and GPIO, giving system designers complete programmatic control over the modem’s operating state. Front-panel LEDs indicate power and network registration status at a glance, simplifying field diagnostics and commissioning.

The M.2 LTE Module expansion board is particularly valuable in remote monitoring, fleet management, smart infrastructure, and distributed IoT deployments where reliable cellular uplinks and location awareness are critical. Combined with the GNSS receiver integrated in the Telit module, the Strato Pi Max can serve as a location-aware edge gateway, enabling applications such as asset tracking, mobile data acquisition, and geo-referenced sensor networks.

With this launch, Sfera Labs further extends the flexibility of the Strato Pi Max ecosystem, giving engineers and system integrators a straightforward path to adding resilient cellular connectivity and GNSS positioning to their industrial, IoT, and edge computing solutions.
